The children of reception, years one and two had a real musical treat on Monday.

Professional percussionist, Dominic Sales, visited the school to show the children some of his collection of tuned and untuned percussion instruments from around the world. As well as playing these he talked to the children about where they were from and how some of these instruments are made. The reception children were fascinated to hear the djembe was partly made from goat skin. 

Dom taught the children a traditional African welcome song, Funga Alafia. They learned the actions and then Dom accompanied their singing on the djembe. He then wowed the children with a marimba performance, playing first with two and then four mallets (sticks)! To finish, he played the drum kit with the children singing Grand Old Duke of York. Years one and two felt the pulse as they marched out of the hall in time to the beat of the drum kit. 

The children were really excited and inspired by the visit and we look forward to further explorations of percussion in our music lessons.
